The Best Books for A Homeschool Library: 16 Fantastic Booklists!
This post shares links to all of our booklists – a roundup of every booklist on this blog so that you can easily find what you’re looking for! Book recommendations for homeschool moms and for kids of all ages, and inspiration for creating your own homeschool library!
There are not many things that I would say are 100% necessary for our homeschool, but good books are definitely one of them – “living books,” as Charlotte Mason would say. Of course, you don’t have to spend thousands of dollars on these good books – the library is a fantastic resource for homeschoolers! – but most homeschoolers do end up collecting favorite books for their personal home library. Over the past 6.5 years of homeschooling we’ve amassed quite a respectable collection, and they have enriched our lives more than I can describe.
If you wonder at times (as I still do!) whether simply reading aloud to your children is worth the time, check out this post with all the amazing benefits to reading aloud. I wrote that post to remind myself, too, that reading is one of the very best things we can do with this fleeting time of childhood.
This post serves as a home base for all my booklists to live in, a round up where you dear readers can easily find just the right next book for your homeschool, to give as a gift to someone special, or to grab at the library! Happy reading!
Your Homeschool Library: Booklists for Kids
You’ll find that most of these booklists are focused on the preschool and elementary age range, because that is where our children currently are (though our oldest is just entering middle school now). However, I strongly believe in the benefits of reading to older children too, and I will do my best to add more booklists for older kids as we enter that season!

Beautiful, living books are not just for your kids! Your own reading life is just as – if not more – important, because kids copy what we do more than what we say and also because reading expands our mind and fills our cup and helps us to be better humans, better parents, and as a result, better homeschoolers. Here are some of my own favorite books!

Favorite Books I Read Each Year:
There you are, sixteen fantastic book lists to get you started with your own homeschool library! Of course, your library will be unique, because you are unique. Some of the books that I’ve loved, you won’t like – and vice versa! Take these booklists as a launching pad, a starting point of inspiration, but not an exact prescription to be copied.
Don’t be afraid to take the time in your day to read your own books (not just to the kids). Investments we make in ourselves, whether mentally or physically, benefit our children too – happier mom equals happier kids! There are some seasons where I only have ten minutes at the end of each day to spend reading, but even that small bit of time adds up. Reading three books a year is much better than reading none, and even one great book can actually, truly change your life for the better.
